Overview
Create an independent copy of any conversation to experiment with different approaches, preserve the original discussion, or share a starting point with others. Forking generates a new chat with all context from the original conversation, allowing you to modify, extend, or branch the discussion without affecting the source.
Learning Objectives:
Locate the Branch button in the chat header
Generate a shareable conversation link
Use the Fork option to create a copy
Understand when to fork versus creating a new chat
Share forked conversations with appropriate team members
Prerequisites
You'll Need:
Access to a workspace with conversation sharing enabled
At least one existing chat conversation
Permission to share chats (enabled by default for chat creators)
Understanding that the forked copy is independent from the original
Note: You can only fork conversations you have permission to share. Private chats require owner permissions to generate share links.
Forking a Conversation
Access the Branch Feature
Navigate to the bottom of the chat
Locate the "Branch" button and click on it
Result: The branch button will open a new window with the forked conversation
Best Practices
Share appropriately: Only share conversations with people who should see the chat.
Document why you forked: Add a note in the forked chat description explaining why you created the copy and what you're testing.
Clean up unused forks: Delete forked conversations that didn't prove useful to keep your workspace organized.
Preserve originals: Keep the original conversation intact as a reference or control for comparison purposes.
Use forks for personal experimentation: When you want to try something that might not work, fork first so you don't clutter the main conversation.
Common Questions
Q: Does the original conversation change when I fork it?
A: No. Forking creates an independent copy. The original remains unchanged, and the fork is a completely separate conversation.
Q: Can multiple people fork the same conversation?
A: Yes. Anyone with share access can generate a link and create their own fork. Each fork is independent.
Q: Will new messages in the original appear in the forked copy?
A: No. The fork contains a snapshot of the conversation at the moment you generated the share link. It doesn't sync with the original.
Q: Can I fork a private chat?
A: Only if you have permission to share it. Private chats require owner permissions to generate share links. If you can't share it, you can't fork it.
