Learning Objectives:
Create a new agent category from the `Agents` page
Assign an agent to a category
Rename an existing category
Delete a category safely
Understand what happens to agents when a category is deleted
Prerequisites
You'll Need:
Access to your workspace
Permission to create or edit agents and agent categories
A workspace plan that supports agent editing and categories
At least one existing agent if you want to assign a category
Note: If you do not have permission, category actions may be hidden. In some workspaces, category editing may also be limited by your current role or plan.
Create Agent Categories
Add a new category from the `Agents` page
Applicable to: Users who can create agent categories
Navigate to `Agents` located in the left sidebar
Wait for the `Agents` page to load.
Look for the `Categories` section in the left panel of the page.
Click the folder-plus button in the `Categories` section
Hover over the button to confirm the tooltip says `Create category`.
This button appears to the right of the `Search agents` field.
Enter the category name in the `New category` dialog
Use the `Name` field.
Enter the category label you want to use.
Click `Create`
The new category is added to the sidebar list.
Result: The new category appears in the `Categories` list on the `Agents` page.
Tip: Use short, clear category names so the sidebar stays easy to scan.
Note: Categories appear alongside `All` and `Uncategorized` in the left panel.
Important: If the create button is missing, disabled, or redirects you to upgrade, your current permission level or workspace plan does not support category creation.
Assign Agent Categories
Assign an agent to one category
Applicable to: Users who can edit agents
Navigate to `Agents` located in the left sidebar
Open the `Agents` page.
Select the agent you want to update.
Open the agent's `General` tab
Open the `Category` dropdown
Select the category you want to assign to the agent.
Select `No category selected` if you want the agent to remain uncategorized.
Click `Save Changes` in the bottom action bar
Result: The agent is assigned to the selected category and appears under that category in the `Agents` sidebar.
Tip: Assign categories after creating a new agent so the sidebar stays organized from the start.
Note: If no categories exist yet, the agent editor shows `No categories available. Please create a category first.`
Important: An agent can belong to only one category at a time.
Rename Agent Categories
Rename a category from the sidebar menu
Applicable to: Users who can update agent categories
Navigate to `Agents` located in the left sidebar
Find the category you want to rename in the `Categories` section.
Open the category options menu
Click `Rename`
The `Rename category` dialog opens.
Update the `Name` field
Click `Rename`
Result: The category name updates in the `Categories` list.
Tip: Rename categories when team terminology changes instead of creating duplicate categories with similar names.
Note: Renaming a category updates the category label. It does not remove agents from the category.
Delete Agent Categories
Delete a category without deleting its agents
Applicable to: Users who can delete agent categories
Navigate to `Agents` located in the left sidebar
Find the category you want to remove in the `Categories` section.
Open the category options menu
Click `Delete`
A confirmation dialog appears.
Review the confirmation message carefully
Click `Yes, delete it`
Wait for the delete action to complete.
Result: The category is removed from the sidebar, and any agents that were in that category move to `Uncategorized`.
Tip: Review the category contents before deleting it if multiple agents are currently assigned there.
Note: `Uncategorized` is the fallback location for agents that do not have a category.
Important: Deleting a category does not delete any agents. Only the category is removed.
Warning: If you delete a category that is currently selected in the sidebar, the view resets away from that category after deletion.
Category management decisions
Decision Point | Options | Recommendations |
You want to organize agents for the first time | Create a new category | Create the category first, then assign agents to it |
You want to move one agent to a different group | Reassign the agent in the `Category` dropdown | Use the agent's `General` tab instead of creating a duplicate agent |
You want to improve category naming | Rename the category | Rename the existing category to keep current assignments intact |
You no longer need a category | Delete the category | Delete it only when you are comfortable moving its agents to `Uncategorized` |
You want an agent with no category | Select `No category selected` | Use this when the agent should stay in `Uncategorized` |
Best Practices
Use stable category names: Choose labels that will still make sense as more agents are added.
Create categories before bulk editing agents: This reduces rework when organizing several agents.
Review the `Uncategorized` list regularly: It helps catch agents that still need organization.
Rename before replacing: If a category's purpose changes, renaming is usually cleaner than deleting and rebuilding.
Delete categories carefully: Make sure the team understands that deletion removes the category but keeps the agents.
Common Questions
Can an agent belong to more than one category?
No. An agent can belong to only one category at a time.
What happens to agents when I delete a category?
The agents are not deleted. They move to `Uncategorized`.
Where do I create a category?
Open `Agents` from the left sidebar, then use the folder-plus button in the `Categories` section.
Where do I assign a category to an agent?
Open the agent, go to the `General` tab, then use the `Category` dropdown and click `Save Changes`.
Why do I not see `Rename` or `Delete` on a category?
The most common reasons are permission limits in your workspace or a workspace plan that does not support category editing. Some reserved system categories may also not show these options.
Can I leave an agent without a category?
Yes. Select `No category selected` in the agent editor, and the agent will appear under `Uncategorized`.
Does renaming a category affect the agents inside it?
No. The agents stay assigned to that category. Only the category name changes.
