Overview
Give a chat a clear name so it's easy to spot in your chat list and quick to find with search.
There are three ways to rename a chat:
From the message box, with the /rename command
From the top of the chat, using the menu on the chat's title
From your chat list, using the three-dot menu next to a chat
Rename From the Message Box
This is the quickest way, and it works on a chat you've only just started.
Click in the message box at the bottom of the chat
Type /rename, a space, and the new title. For example: /rename Q4 launch
Check the menu above the message box. It shows Rename to "Q4 launch".
Press Enter
You'll see a Renamed to "Q4 launch" confirmation. The command is cleared from the message box, and nothing is sent to the AI.
Edit the Current Title Instead
To tweak a title rather than retype it:
Type /rename and press Enter. You can also type / and choose Rename chat.
The current title appears in the message box, after /rename
Edit it, then press Enter again
Note: /rename is available once the chat has its first message. It isn't available in a temporary chat.
Rename From the Top of the Chat
Open the chat
Click the chat's title at the top of the page
Click Rename
Enter the new title under Chat Title and click Rename Chat
Rename From Your Chat List
In the left panel, hover over the chat you want to rename
Click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to it
Click Rename
Enter the new title and click Rename Chat
Title Rules
A title can be up to 255 characters
Emoji and right-to-left text work as expected
Invisible characters, such as zero-width spaces pasted from other apps, are removed automatically
A title needs at least one visible character
Tips for Good Chat Names
Rename early. Name a chat as soon as its purpose is clear, so it doesn't get lost among untitled ones.
Be specific but short. "Q4 launch – email plan" is easier to scan than a full sentence.
Use a consistent pattern. Starting with a client, project or team name keeps related chats together when you search.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does renaming change the conversation?
No. Only the title changes. When you use /rename, nothing is sent to the AI.
Why don't I see Rename chat when I type /?
It appears once the chat has its first message. On a brand-new chat, send your first message and try again. It also doesn't appear in a temporary chat.
I see "title is too long". What do I do?
Titles can be up to 255 characters. Shorten the title and try again.
What happens if a rename fails?
The title stays as it was, and what you typed is put back in the message box so you can try again.
Can I rename a chat more than once?
Yes, as often as you like.
