Overview

Rename chat conversations to reflect their content, purpose, or participants for easier identification and organization. This tutorial walks through locating the chat settings and updating its name with immediate effect across the workspace.

Learning Objectives:

  • Locate chat-specific options using the Actions menu

  • Access the rename dialog from chat settings

  • Enter and confirm a new chat name

  • Understand chat naming conventions and character limits

Prerequisites

You'll Need:

  • Access to a workspace with active chat conversations

  • Owner or editor permissions for the chat you want to rename

  • At least one existing chat in your left panel

Note: You can only rename chats you created or where you have been granted editor permissions. Chats owned by others may not show rename options.

Renaming a Chat

Locate the Chat in Your Navigation

  1. Navigate to the left panel to view your workspace navigation menu

Result: You locate chat through manual browsing and visual identification.

Tip: If you have many chats, use the search bar at the top of the left panel to quickly locate the chat by typing part of its current name.

Rename Chat for Easy Future Access

Assign Descriptive Name

  1. Click on chat entry

    • In chat history list, locate the chat you want to rename

    • Click on the chat to select it

  2. Open chat actions menu

    • Find the three-dot menu (β‹―) next to the chat name

    • Click the three dots to open the menu

  3. Select Rename option

    • In the menu that appears, click "Rename"

  4. Enter new descriptive name

    • Chat name becomes editable field

    • Type a clear, descriptive name that will help you identify this chat in the future

    • Examples:

      • "Q4 Sales Analysis - Customer Segments"

      • "Competitor Research - Product A Feature Comparison"

      • "Client Meeting Notes - ABC Corp Dec 2024"

  5. Save the new name

    • A pop up window will show, rename the chat and click on update

Result: Chat is renamed and will appear with the new descriptive name in all future searches and lists.

Tip: Use consistent naming conventions across your chats for easier organization. Include dates, project names, or key topics.

Best Practices

  1. Name chats immediately after creation: Don't leave chats as "New Chat" - rename them when the purpose becomes clear to avoid confusion later.

  2. Use consistent naming conventions: Establish team-wide standards for chat names to make searching and organization easier for everyone.

  3. Be specific but concise: Include enough detail to identify the chat's purpose without making names excessively long (aim for under 50 characters).

  4. Rename when scope changes: If a chat evolves from its original purpose, update the name to reflect its current use to help others understand the conversation context.

  5. Use prefixes for identification: Consider using consistent prefixes like "DRAFT", "FINAL", "URGENT", or department codes for quick visual scanning.

Common Questions

Q: Can I rename a chat someone else created?
A: Only if you have been granted editor permissions on that chat. Otherwise, the rename option will not appear in the Actions menu. Contact the chat owner to request permissions.

Q: Is there a limit to how many times I can rename a chat?
A: No. You can rename a chat as many times as needed. There are no restrictions or penalties for frequent renaming.

Q: What happens if two people try to rename the same chat simultaneously?
A: The first change to be saved takes precedence. The second person will see the updated name and can modify it further if needed. No conflict warnings appear.
